Best of the Northwest Tour
One of our favorites, this 6 day self-tour combines the best roads and natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia, Canada, with six scenic ferry crossings.
Day 1: 130 miles/209 km
You'll embark on a 6-day riding tour that will take you through some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery in the western United States. You'll have the opportunity to visit the world-renown San Juan Islands, reachable only by air, ferry or pleasure boat. These idyllic islands are a favorite hide-away of celebrities and locals alike.
After settling into your accommodations, you'll have time to relax or explore the area. For those who would like to do a little more riding, the twisty ride up Mt. Constitution is well worth it. The highest point in the San Juan Islands, the lookout tower atop Mt. Constitution boasts a 360 degree view of the San Juan Islands, both the Cascade and Olympic mountains, and Vancouver Island.
Day 2: 170 miles/274 km
Up bright and early, you'll take the ferry to Sidney, British Columbia. After a short stop at Canadian Customs,
you'll cruise along the eastern coastline of scenic Vancouver Island. and wrap up the day's journey with another ferry ride back to the British Columbia mainland, and what's affectionately known as the "Sunshine Coast."
Day 3: 234 miles/378 km
The third day will begin with two more scenic ferry crossings, bringing you to the northern outskirts of Vancouver, B.C., where
you'll ride east towards the famed Fraser Valley. Along this stretch, you'll see
first hand how the Ice Age left its signature on this area. That evening, you
might want to enjoy dinner along with a fabulous view of Hell's Gate on the Fraser River. If you're comfortable with heights you can take the Air Tram across the Hell's Gate Canyon, where you'll have a fantastic bird's eye view of the roiling waters below.
Day 4: 252 miles/404 km
On this part of the journey you'll see a completely different landscape as
you traverse the Coastal Range into the dry, arid region of central B.C. Traveling along the border,
you'll continue east, passing through the spectacular Similkameen Valley, which is known for its vast ranches and gold mining history. That night
you'll enjoy the hospitality of the Sunshine Valley.
Day 5: 238 miles/385 km
After a short ride east along the border, you'll cross back into the United States and ride south along Lake Roosevelt, one of the largest dam reservoirs in the country. One of
your stops should be the magnificent Grand Coulee Dam. Taking 42 years to build, it stands 550 feet in height. The base of the dam is almost four times as large as the Great Pyramid built by the Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops).
You'll see another major dam on the way to Chelan, one of the most popular recreation areas in Washington State, and
your final night's destination.
Day 6: 171 miles/273 km
After a hearty breakfast, you'll roll south along the famous Columbia River before heading west to Leavenworth, a quaint Bavarian village nestled in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains. A great place to stop for lunch and explore! After lunch,
you'll cross over the Cascade Mountains and drop back into Western Washington for the final leg of
your adventure.
